Appeals & Grants Coordinator
Location: Washington, D.C.

Job Description and Responsibilities
The Thomistic Institute is looking for an Appeals and Grants Coordinator to work in our D.C. office. The Appeals and Grants Coordinator reports to the Lead Development Officer, and ultimately to the Director of the Thomistic Institute who has the ultimate responsibility for TI development activities. Principal responsibilities include:

Appeals - Has primary responsibility for coordinating and executing TI direct mail, email, and crowdfunding appeals (presently, 5-6 appeals per year), including:

Planning in advance for appeal themes, timing, and parameters, with the Lead Development Officer and the Director of the TI;

Coordinating the work of the TI team to generate the appeal text, determine the target mailing lists, and develop other materials for the appeal (including social media, audio, and other digital advertising to accompany the appeal);

Coordinating with mail fulfillment vendors to print and mail the direct mail pieces in a timely manner;

Tracking and analyzing appeal metrics in order to gain efficiencies and increase the net revenue from appeals;

Develop and implement strategies to thank and report to donors, as part of a wider effort to increase small donor engagement and gifts.

Grants - Has primary responsibility for coordinating and executing TI applications for new grants, and for reporting to foundations for the grants we have obtained. This includes:

Meeting with TI team members to determine how to frame TI proposals for future grants;

Gathering all necessary information for grant applications; generating the documents, spreadsheets, and other submissions; and drafting grant proposals (with support from other TI team members) in a timely manner;

Gathering information on the use of grant funding, assembling metrics for reporting to grantors, and serving as the primary point of contact with foundations.

Donor Communications - Tasked with the coordination and production of other donor communications like newsletters, gift impact reports, and other fundraising promotional items. Will share some responsibility for our Annual Report.

Support for Development Operations - Processes gifts received from appeals and other sources, and, as requested by the Director or the Lead Development Officer, supports them in other development operations (e.g., preparing materials for meetings with major benefactors, record-keeping about major benefactor meetings, etc.)

Thank-you calls - Coordinates other TI team members, graduate students, and contractors, in systematically making thank-you calls to TI donors, as part of a wider effort better to engage small-to-medium donors. As time permits given the above responsibilities, the Appeals and Grants Coordinator will also make thank-you calls.

As needed, speaking on behalf of the TI to explain its mission and introducing the core principles of the Catholic faith and of the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Important Traits and Skills:

4+ years of experience in development and fundraising, demonstrating responsibility, good judgment, and strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

At least a B.A. degree or its equivalent;

Good verbal and written communication skills, thrives working with people and building relationships;

Organized, responsible, self-motivated; comfort and precision in handling project logistics;

Meets deadlines and can take responsibility for important projects without requiring close supervision;

Knowledge of the Catholic intellectual tradition and motivation to spread the faith by intellectual evangelization;

Expertise in Excel, Salesforce, and Pardot are a plus.

The Thomistic Institute is a research institute of the Pontifical Faculty of the Dominican House of Studies and an apostolate of the Dominican friars of the Province of St. Joseph. This person holding this position will represent the Dominican friars in public, will bear witness to and teach the Catholic faith, and will occasionally lead others in prayer. Applicants must be practicing Catholics in good standing who assent to and profess the Catholic faith in its entirety as presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

This position is a full-time, in-office position in Washington, D.C., and requires full-time residency in Washington.

As part of the position, the Appeals & Grants Coordinator will be entitled to audit one course (free of charge) per semester at the Dominican House of Studies (e.g., M.A. level classes in philosophy or theology), during office hours. Class time is considered part of the work day and does not need to be made up later.

All members of the TI team are encouraged to participate in the regular liturgical life of the Dominican friars (e.g., step away from work for Mass, the daily midday rosary, the divine office, etc.).

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Two weeks of paid vacation; in addition, TI employees receive paid leave for most public holidays and Catholic Solemnities (e.g., the Triduum, St. Joseph's Day, Immaculate Conception), plus from Dec. 21-Jan. 2 for the Christmas/New Year's holiday.
