Job Description
Coeur du Christ Academy is a coeducational classical academy in the Catholic tradition serving grades 9-12. As we expand and grow, we are seeking additional full time faculty to lead advanced Mathematics and Natural Science courses, including Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, and other natural sciences. The primary responsibilities of CDCA faculty include:
* Integrate faith and reason in the minds of CDCA students.
* Promote and enable academic excellence in their specific disciplines, in accordance with CDCA's academic philosophy.
* Mentor and guide students to see the providence of God in creation and in their lives.
CDCA has articulated the following academic philosophy of mathematics and the natural sciences:
Mathematics
Mathematics at Coeur du Christ has a threefold purpose: preparation for higher sciences (e.g. philosophy and theology), as a handmaid to the natural sciences, and as a subject studied for its own sake and for the sake of beauty. The foundation of our mathematics curriculum is based on the Quadrivium. Number in the abstract (arithmetic) permeates all our math courses. Number in space (geometry) is seen in the Euclidean aspects of Geometry as well as in the analytic geometry of Algebra II, Precalculus, and Calculus. Number in space and time (astronomy) is seen as part of the application of number to all of the sciences (scientia), especially Chemistry and Physics. Ultimately, mathematics moves us from the world of particulars to the world of the universals (cf. Plato's Republic, VII). Our courses include: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, Calculus.
Natural Sciences
"To know the mighty works of God, to comprehend His wisdom and majesty and power; to appreciate, in degree, the wonderful workings of His laws, surely all this must be a pleasing and acceptable mode of worship to the Most High..." (Nicolaus Copernicus). To study the natural sciences is to delve into the very blueprints of the cosmos from the creator, Himself. At Coeur du Christ we strive to grasp the goodness of God's creation in the disciplines of Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Advanced Biology, with openness to other fields given competent instructors. We do this by observing the natural world through outdoor excursions, star gazing, microscopy, dissections, human anatomy, medical applications, kinematics, mechanics, electromagnetics, and atomic structures. Science instruction begins in wonder, proceeds through observation and experimentation, and seeks to build practical models that aim to discover the universal laws written into the cosmos by its creator.
Highly qualified Applicants should demonstrate:
* excellence in the intellectual life, with special competencies in mathematics and natural science,
* a self starter mentality with a good work ethic and attention to detail,
* a proven sense of servant leadership and selfless service to every student's learning,
* a strong sense of discretion and strong moral character,
* a proven ability to inspire and form students,
* a desire to build a strong academy culture,
* familiarity with liberal arts education, and
* zeal for the Catholic faith.
Applicants should also:
* Be Roman Catholic.
* Pledge fidelity to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church.
* Hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree, ideally in mathematics, engineering, or similar course of study (graduate degree preferred). Relevant experience teaching mathematics also will be considered. Non-teaching experience relevant to mathematics and/or the natural sciences will also be considered.
* Commit to assisting with select extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports, and pilgrimages, as assigned.
* Be able to complete Safe Environment training and successfully complete background check requirements.
* Adhere to the Teacher Commitment: to Teach as Jesus Taught.
The articulated responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Managing ~4 math and/or science preps (lesson planning, grading, tracking, and reporting to the Headmaster).
* Attending all necessary faculty meetings and parent meetings.
* Attending daily mass on Wednesdays and first Fridays.
* Utilizing the school information system in a timely manner, while showing strong, professional communication skills with leadership, families, colleagues, and students.
