Job Description

I. General Description

Coordinate the planning, implementation, and administration of an existing music ministry program comprised of an adult choir, youth choir, children's choir, and cantors for Queen of the Apostles parish community that complements our Catholic Faith and encourages "full, active, and conscious participation" in parish liturgies.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Execute a music ministry plan in collaboration with the Pastor or his designee, and the Director of Parish Operations.
• Coordinate the staffing of all parish liturgies with competent musicians and vocalists.
• Recruit, train, and sustain quality cantors for the parish liturgies.
• Program appropriate liturgical music for Sunday and Holy Day liturgies and rehearse with the Adult Choir weekly.
• Program appropriate liturgical music for Children's Choir (elementary-aged children) and Youth Choir (middle and high school-aged children) and rehearse with those groups weekly.
• Obtain, use, maintain, and report copyright permission for music.
• Create and provide worship aids to the congregation as required.
• Operate sound system (via QuPac application on parish iPad) during liturgies.
• In conjunction with the Finance Committee designee, formulate and adhere to an annual music ministry budget.
• Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

III. Accountability and Collaborative Relationships

• The Director of Music reports to and is evaluated by the Pastor and/or Director of Parish Operations.
• The Director of Music should maintain collaborative relationships with parish staff, accompanists, and music volunteers.
• Maintain an open relationship with the Diocesan office of Liturgy and remain current with music trends, liturgical norms, and directives.

IV. Working Conditions

• This position will require working weekends, days, evenings, holidays, Holy Days of Obligation, and other parish liturgical celebrations. Employer is flexible with days/time off.
• Special liturgical celebrations such as weddings and funerals may be compensated separately.
• Work is performed primarily in the church and office setting.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand,
walk, talk, reach, sit, hear, and use the repetitive motion of the hands/wrists and feet. Employee may be required to lift 25 pounds.

V. Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor of Music/Arts/Science in church music, sacred music, or music education required.
• Background in Catholic liturgical music preferred.
• Understanding of and respect for Catholic liturgical principles and other teachings is required.
• Experience in choral music conducting and experience teaching music to vocalists and/or instrumentalists highly preferred.
• Experience with audio engineering and live sound preferred.
• Proficient in the use of general office equipment and computers, including email, office machines (copier, etc.), Google Drive, Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and Publisher).
• Candidates for employment must submit to and pass a criminal background check and complete Safe Environment Training.
