Director of Music/Liturgy--Full Time

JOB DESCRIPTION

SCOPE
The Director of Music and Liturgy ensures the highest quality music at all liturgies that
draws the congregation to full, active and conscious participation. The Director has
primary responsibility for planning and developing of the music ministry and liturgical
celebrations of this parish of 1000 families, located in El Campo, Texas, the Victoria
Diocese as well as assisting in the coordinating of the music ministry with the parochial
school.
CHARACTER AND NATURE OF POSITION
The Director is well versed in the various aspects of liturgical music and liturgy and has
over-all responsibility for all cantors, choirs, ensembles, instrumentalists and other
related areas.
The Director assures that all involved in music ministry realize their maximum potential
through effective leadership and training.
The Director participates in planning worship and leading music at the liturgies,
including those occasions when the Bishop presides and also works with the Diocesan
Liturgical Commission in diocesan liturgical celebrations, including ordinations, Rite of
Election, the Chrism Mass, etc.
The Director is able to work with all age groups, respecting and fostering the diversity in
musical styles, including, on occasion, bilingual music and liturgy. Therefore, the
Director should be enthusiastic, creative, a good communicator and enjoy working with a
team environment.
The Director maintains an atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation with priests,
deacons, all parish and school staff, parishioners and the diocese.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruit, train and schedule music ministers and communicate the schedule with
parish staff.
Prepare recommendations for annual music ministry budget.
Oversee the purchase of new music and music instruments.
Maintain sound equipment, musical instruments, i.e., organ, piano, and schedule
any repairs and regular maintenance ie... piano tuning.
Organize and maintain music files, subscriptions, licenses, etc.
Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
Research and select suitable music for the choirs.
Direct and lead weekly choir rehearsals.
Provide for substitutes when personally unavailable.

Assist at funerals and weddings or coordinate other choirs or cantors (specific fee
schedule determined separately).
Participate in appropriate continuing education with the approval of the pastor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Be a Catholic in good standing and of good character.
Have a Bachelor's degree in music or higher.
Have a strong background in the understanding of Catholic liturgy.
Demonstrate competency in playing organ as well as piano.
Show experience leading and mentoring choirs.

ACCOUNTABILITY
The Director of Music is a full-time ministry position and reports to the pastor. The
Director must be able to be diocesan Safe Environment trained and maintain necessary
compliance.
