About Don Bosco Workers, Inc.:
Don Bosco Workers, Inc. is a Catholic grassroots community-organizing group led by Latino immigrant day laborers, other low-income workers, and leaders of the Port Chester Community. Rooted in Catholic Social Justice principles, we advocate for the full and fair participation of immigrant workers in the labor market through workplace rights education, leadership development, and direct advocacy efforts. We focus on addressing workplace abuse, such as wage theft and unsafe conditions, while empowering workers to be agents of change in their communities.
Job Summary:
Don Bosco Workers, Inc. is seeking a Workers' Rights Advocate to lead efforts in protecting and promoting immigrant workers' rights, with a particular focus on wage theft prevention, case management, and community organizing. The advocate will conduct outreach, education, and case intake, ensuring that workers facing labor violations receive the resources and support they need. This role requires a passionate and committed individual with experience in workers' rights, advocacy, and community engagement.
As a key member of our team, the Workers' Rights Advocate will play a vital role in organizing workers, developing leadership within the community, and working with legal and advocacy partners to advance labor rights. The ideal candidate is bilingual in Spanish and English, has a strong background in labor rights advocacy, and is committed to the values of reason, faith, and loving kindness in the tradition of St. John Bosco.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
PRIORITY
1. Workers' Rights Advocacy & Case Management
• Conduct intakes, screenings, and case management for workers experiencing wage theft, discrimination, workplace injuries, or other labor rights violations.
• Assist workers in filing wage theft claims with agencies such as the New York State Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, EEOC, and small claims courts.
• Maintain accurate records of cases, training, and worker complaints, ensuring timely follow-ups.
• Liaise with attorneys, legal service providers, and government agencies to support workers through legal proceedings and resolution processes.
• Provide Know Your Rights training and individualized case guidance to workers.
2. Community Outreach & Education
• Conduct outreach to day laborers and other immigrant workers to identify workplace violations and connect them to resources.
• Organize and facilitate worker rights workshops to educate workers on their rights, best practices for labor protection, and methods for seeking recourse.
• Develop and execute an outreach plan to engage new workers and expand Don Bosco Workers' advocacy network.
• Strengthen community partnerships with legal aid organizations, unions, worker centers, and faith-based groups to advance worker protection efforts.
3. Leadership Development & Worker Organizing
• Identify potential worker leaders and provide training on leadership, advocacy, and labor organizing.
• Support worker-led initiatives, campaigns, and advocacy efforts to push for stronger labor protections and policies.
• Develop leadership and volunteer opportunities for workers to engage in advocacy, outreach, and education efforts.
4. Policy Advocacy & Collaboration
• Represent Don Bosco Workers, Inc. in local and regional labor rights initiatives, including coalitions like Alianza Laboral de Westchester.
• Participate in advocacy campaigns such as Excluded Workers Fund, DALE, and the Empire State Licensing Act to advance pro-worker policies.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, elected officials, labor organizations, and community partners.
5. Administrative & Program Support
• Track and maintain case files and outreach data in Salesforce or other case management systems.
• Assist in writing reports, grant applications, and documentation to demonstrate impact.
• Stay informed on policy developments and legal changes affecting immigrant and low-wage workers.
Qualifications & Skills Required:
• 2-3 years of experience in community organizing, worker advocacy, or legal assistance related to workers' rights.
• Strong understanding of labor rights issues affecting immigrant and day laborer communities, including wage theft, workplace safety, and discrimination.
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) required to effectively communicate with immigrant workers.
• Experience with case management, including intake processes and filing claims with labor enforcement agencies.
• Ability to work collaboratively with workers, legal advocates, and policymakers.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to engage and empower community members.
• Strong organizational and administrative skills, including record-keeping and reporting.
• Commitment to social justice, worker empowerment, and the mission of Don Bosco Workers, Inc.
• Familiarity with local and federal labor laws and enforcement mechanisms.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Salesforce, or similar case management tools is a plus.
• Driver License
Position Details:
• Schedule: 20-25 hours per week (some evening/weekend work required).
• Location: Port Chester, NY, with occasional travel for outreach and meetings.
• Compensation: $20 - $25 per hour, based on experience.
• Probation Period: 6 months.
