Job Description
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, located in Southern Chester County at 300 State Road, West Grove PA 19390, has a vibrant music program. We are looking for someone who can serve as our Parish Music Director. He/she will play the organ for two or three Masses on the weekend and sometimes the piano.Responsibilities include:
- Scheduling, training, and recruiting cantors for all liturgical events, including funerals and weddings;
- Planning the music for all liturgies except those played by the contemporary parish group; ordering music and maintaining permission to use copyrighted music as necessary;
- Playing the organ for Sunday Masses, for funerals, weddings, holy days, services of Holy Week, Confirmation, First Communion, School Graduation, Stations of the Cross and Adoration on Wednesdays of Lent in the evening, and other parish devotion services such as a parish mission and 40 Hours;
- Overseeing the Bell Choir;
- Attending Liturgy Committee meetings, usually four or five times a year;
- Supervising and arranging for tuning or repair when necessary of the church organ and the pianos in the church, chapel and St. Cecilia room in the parish life center;
- Work with the Pastor and Business Manager in planning an annual music budget.
Required skills and education:
- formal training in classical or sacred music performance or equivalent experience preferred;
- familiarity with the Latin Rite of the Mass and its seasons;
- a candidate for this position must be an accomplished organist who is able to play classical pieces for the prelude and postlude to the Mass.
Hours and Benefits
This is a competitive salaried position based on education, skills, and experience. The Parish Music Director receives the benefits of a full-time parish employee, including health insurance, pension, and life insurance. Schedule and hours are determined by performance schedule and rehearsals. The position allows for three paid weekends off a full calendar year. The dates must be approved by the pastor.
Expectations
The Parish Music Director must have a love for the Eucharist and its celebration and be a practicing Catholic who lives according to the norms of the Catholic Church.
All employees must pass Safe Environment background checks and attend the Safe Environment training for parish employees which is required by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
