Job Description

Homeschool Connections, the premier Catholic online curriculum provider for middle and high school students with over 700 recorded online courses and over 200 LIVE courses online per year, has one (1) opening for a LIVE course High School Writing Teacher (11th and 12th-grade students) for a pre-college writing course with the award-winning Aquinas Writing Advantage (AWA) online writing program. There is also one (1) opening for a LIVE High School course Instructor to design and teach one semester of International Writing and Editing and a second semester of Catholic Writing and Editing. The positions are contract, fully remote, and part-time, with courses to begin in Fall 2025.

If you're passionate about teaching writing, then keep reading. Using an already-designed program and set content for the courses, the Online Instructor teaches an hour-long class LIVE each week for two (2) sections, September through April (approx. 25 students per course); communicates with parents and students at least six (6) times per semester; answers student emails and questions in a timely way; and grades student work within seven (7) days of the submission deadline. The teacher also attends a once-a-month writing teacher meeting and has touch-base meetings with the Senior Program Director and/or the Managing Director. With this position, you function as an independent contractor expert who's provided with exactly what you need to connect with students. There's nothing like this online.

This contracted remote position is for an individual who can be independently in charge of his/her courses yet maintain clear communication (and follow directions) in coordination with the directors. The ideal candidate wants to work part-time during daytime hours in what he/she loves; is supportive of the Catholic faith and believes in the Nicene Creed; is highly skilled in the teaching of academic writing for high school students; works well within a team of writing teachers; can faithfully follow an already-designed curriculum; and can commit to staying in the position for at least two years. Most teachers for AWA also have a strong background in personal teaching and writing (articles or books published, professional editing, etc.) and are familiar with homeschooling/online schooling at home.

Applicant Requirements/Qualifications

Applicant must have the following:
• A minimum of five (5) years of high school writing instruction experience; 10+ years preferred; high school writing teaching experience required; college writing teachers may apply
• A minimum of a bachelor's degree in English/writing from an accredited university, with a master's degree preferred
• A joyful, positive online demeanor that students can connect with
• Experience guiding and leading both skilled and struggling students
• Impeccable, detailed academic writing and editing abilities
• Experience working remotely with online teaching and LMS (required)
• High organization skills
• Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal
• Able to work independently, managing resources and documentation
• Tact and skill in working with parents of high school students
• The ability to integrate the tenets of the Catholic faith into all work relationships and performance

Job Responsibilities include the following:
• Teaches two (2) LIVE courses per week: 20 minutes in the classroom beforehand with the Course Monitor (second adult) and an additional hour teaching (for each of the two sections) per week
* Gives timely, friendly, respectful responses to parents and students, including excellent follow-up in primary and secondary contact; answers student and parent emails within 24 hours, M-F; and communicates with parents via email before, during (midterm), and after (finals) each course.
• Communicates clearly and regularly with the Directors of the Aquinas Writing Advantage program (at set times and as needed).
• Gives excellent feedback on all writing assignments (both overall comments and specific, in-line feedback) that meets and exceeds student/parent expectations within seven (7) days of the assignment deadline

Application Instructions:
• In an email, send three attachments: 1) a resume, 2) three professional references (complete contact information, including email and phone number), and 3) a letter of introduction stating why you're the best candidate for the position.

Send all of the above to the Senior Director of the Aquinas Writing Advantage Program, Erin M. Brown, MA, MFA, at ebconroy@homeschoolconnections.com with the subject line, "High School Writing Teacher Application." Copy Managing Director Aubrey Heki at aheki@homeschoolconnections.com.
