American Sign Language Teaching Position (Part Time)

Description:

Cardinal Newman School of Columbia, South Carolina is accepting applications for a dependable and qualified American Sign Language teacher (part-time) for the 2025-2026 academic year. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of ASL grammar, fluency in signing, experience creating engaging lessons that cater to diverse learning styles, and know the Deaf culture and community. New teacher orientation begins on August 6th.

Primary Responsibilities:

-Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the
school.
-Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the
school and Diocese.
-Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.
-Understand and develop ASL curriculum aligned with ASLTA and ACTFL
standards, teach ASL vocabulary grammar, and cultural aspects, developing schedules,
lesson plans, and teaching methods that will help students cover the required content.
-Preparing and delivering lessons that are stimulating and clear, and assessing student
progress.
-Encourage classroom participation by all.
-Setting up tests, assignments, and projects and grading students fairly.
-Ensuring appropriate resources and consultation times are available to students, and
adapting instruction to meet individual student needs.
-Maintain strict records of student attendance, participation, homework, lab work, and
test results.
-Organizing guest speakers, literary events, and appropriate field trips, obtaining
parental permission for all students involved, and ensuring student safety when outside
the school.
-Attending staff and parent meetings, conferences, workshops, and other continuing
education programs.
-Handling various administration functions, which include updating student records and
keeping track of lab supplies, tools, and equipment.
-Ensuring a safe, healthy classroom environment where learning can take place

Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree in Deaf Studies, Linguistics, or a related discipline, although a
master's or above is preferred.
-ASL certification or equivalent certification.
-Teaching certification is preferred.
-Knowledge of teaching styles is recommended.
-Excellent interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills.
-Ability to inspire and motivate students.
-Strong multitasking skills.

About the Employer

Originally founded in 1858 by the Ursuline sisters, Cardinal Newman opened on the parish grounds of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Columbia as both Ursuline and Catholic High schools, respectively, until moving to Forest Drive in 1961, where it remained until December 2015. In January 2016, Cardinal Newman opened a state-of-the-art, 75-acre campus at 2945 Alpine Road.
