Position: Managing Editor/News Content ProducerDepartment: Office of Communications and Public Relations
Reports To: Executive Director of Communications & Public Relations
Classification: Exempt
General Description
The Archdiocese of Newark is seeking a dynamic and motivated Managing Editor/News Content Producer to join its talented Office of Communications team. This role presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the archdiocese's mission by sharing compelling faith-based stories, advancing evangelization efforts, and promoting the archbishop's vision and priorities.
The Managing Editor/News Content Producer will play a key role in shaping the Archdiocese's digital presence by creating engaging news and feature stories. This position is responsible for producing high-quality content for the Archdiocese's various digital communication platforms, including its news site, Jersey Catholic.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
The following specific responsibilities are representative of the duties required in this position. They may be unilaterally but reasonably changed based on the working environment and departmental needs.
Content Development and Creation
• Develop, propose, and create faith-based articles, feature stories, videos, and other content for the Archdiocese's news platform, JerseyCatholic.org, as well as for other relevant archdiocesan communication channels.
• Cover events and conduct interviews with key stakeholders to produce high-quality, engaging content.
• Collect, analyze, and organize information from various sources, including leads and syndicated content, to develop story ideas and produce content for publication internally or externally.
• Strive to capture the diversity of the Archdiocese, including its parishes, schools, faith communities, and people, across all content channels.
• Assist with writing assignments and special projects.
Multimedia and Digital Platform Management
• Develop and produce multimedia content, incorporating visual components such as photos, videos, and graphics to enhance storytelling.
• Support the news site's design, layout, and operational functionality, working with the website administrator as needed.
• Regularly monitor analytics to assess content performance, drive engagement, and identify growth opportunities.
Collaboration and Outreach
• Work closely with the communications team to ensure timely and high-quality content publication.
• Partner with department heads to highlight ministries and support strategic initiatives.
• Network with Archdiocesan colleagues to gather story ideas from various ministries and stay informed about events and initiatives.
Social Media and Community Engagement
• Contribute to the Archdiocese's social media presence through story-post collaborations on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.
• Engage with the faith community by creating content that resonates with diverse audiences and reflects the Archdiocese's mission.
Professional Growth and Additional Duties
• Maintain a current level of knowledge and skills required to serve effectively as a cross-platform editor, journalist, and communications professional.
• Take on additional tasks and special projects as assigned to support the communications team's goals.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills
• Must be a practicing Roman Catholic who upholds the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church, with the ability to integrate that knowledge into news coverage.
• Must possess excellent writing and editing skills, demonstrating strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Must be a team player with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, fostering positive working relationships.
• Must excel in a fast-paced environment, capable of multi-tasking effectively and adapting quickly to changing priorities.
• Must maintain a polished professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, WordPress, Google Workspace, and Adobe Suite; experience with photography and video production is a plus.
• Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
• Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed and possess a valid driver's license to cover stories throughout the Archdiocese of Newark, which spans Bergen, Essex, Union, and Hudson counties.
Education and/or Experience (Preferred)
• Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field.
• A minimum of five years of experience in journalism, communications, or a related field.
