Position Description

Job Title: Art Teacher; Long-Term Substitute (Temporary)
FLSA: Exempt
Job Status: Part-Time
Reporting Functions: Reports to Principal

Job Function: Responsible for teaching and developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to teach and develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Creates lesson plans that teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history that are appropriate for the age and abilities of the students in the class.

- Teach and encourage the use of different medias of drawing (charcoal pencil, acrylics, etc.)

- Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.

- Demonstrate, teach, and assist students in techniques in activities such as drawing and painting and teach the versatility of acrylic paints: dry brushing, staining, layering, underpainting, mono-printing, etc.

- Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.

- Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.

- Organize storage areas and control the use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.

-Posts grades and sends grade reports to parents as required by the school system. Monitor students' progress with grades and report cards. Organize feedback sessions with students and their parents if applicable.

- Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records. Runs the classroom within the allocated budget.

- Encourages creativity in students.

- Attend school preparation days, in-service and staff development opportunities, and Diocesan educational workshops; attend and participate in school faculty meetings, open houses, and other school-related activities upon the request of the principal.

- Actively establishes and maintains appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe, orderly, effective, and productive environment. Upholds La Salle Academy's discipline procedures.

- Any other duties assigned by the Principal.

Educational Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree, typically in education with a specialization in art or art education.

- Experience working with children in an art studio and/or classroom setting.

Other Requirements:

- Due to the nature and mission of the Catholic Church, all employees are bound to exhibit respect for the teachings and discipline of the Church regarding matters of faith and morals.

- Knowledge of art history and different art genres in order to teach a range of art styles and possess enthusiasm and creativity themselves.

- Ability to communicate concrete and abstract concepts to students.

- Must possess patience and be able to motivate students. Ability to spot and cultivate creativity.

- Must have strong organizational and time management skills.

- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

- High degree of integrity, loyalty, and dependability and have a strong work ethic and be able to work independently.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity and fine finger and hand manipulation to dial a telephone, enter data into a computer and use tools applied to art; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 20 pounds; and to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

Working Conditions: Normal classroom setting. Part-time; 2 days per week; temporary, long-term substitute position. Normal work hours are 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
