Job Summary and Objective
The Summer Resident Director assumes an active role of assisting St. John's Catholic Newman Center in providing a superior living environment for the summer students and conference guests of Newman Hall. The Resident Director is responsible for serving as the chief communication liaison among administration, department heads, University officials, and residents/guests with regard to resident events and issues. The Summer Resident Director assumes responsibility for the Conference Assistant Team and for resident life at Newman Hall. He or she should constantly promote wholesome programs for enriching community and fellowship, ensure that rules and regulations are enforced consistently and fairly, and advocate the best interest of the residents while assisting with administrative decisions. The Summer RD takes a lead role in providing exceptional customer service to the conference attendees residing at Newman Hall during the summer.
Supervisory Responsibilities
• Supervise 10 Conference Assistants
o Establish and conduct Summer CA training sessions.
o Coordinate weekly staff meetings to provide relevant information and clear communication.
o Conduct monthly one-on-one meetings with CA staff
o Provide evaluation and feedback regarding performance and expectations
o Facilitate staff development, professional development and on-going training for the staff
o Monitor and maintain the CA on Duty schedule
o Oversee management of programming and staff development budgets.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties
• Work with Director of Operations and Hall Office Manager to coordinate check in/check out of summer conference guests
• Follow up with all documentation accurately, thoroughly, and timely.
• Make effort to get to know residents and maintain a high level of visibility within the Newman Hall community.
• Serve as a resource or referral for information concerning University life.
• Act as a positive role model at all times (on and off campus).
• Thoroughly understand Newman Hall as outlined in Newman Hall Rules and Regulations.
• Document all disciplinary actions taken and follow up with Newman Hall administration.
• Review all incident reports and communicate with campus resources when necessary.
• Maintain constant communication with Newman Hall staff and SJCNC ministries.
• Coordinate and serve in On-Call RD coverage rotation.
Additional Responsibilities
• Provide leadership during crises.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree and experience in Residential Life or campus housing
• Student Affairs involvement and/or leadership experiences
• Ability to apply expert knowledge of rules and regulations to a variety of situations
• Ability to mediate and resolve conflict
• Must possess an authoritative approach to a variety of disciplinary issues
• Strong critical-thinking skills
Working Conditions
This position is a full-time, live-in, summer commitment. The Summer Resident Director must tolerate late-night hours and resident or external disturbances. The Resident Director has extensive contact with residents, personnel in various Newman Center departments, and community affiliates. The Resident Director also has contact with parents of prospective and current students, and University of Illinois and Parkland College administration. Mentally, the position requires good judgment and clear thinking in emergency situations in accordance with Newman Center policies. It also requires excellent time management and ability to work under occasional high-stress situations.
Salary- $11,000 summer stipend plus room and board.
