THE POSITION: The After School Program Leader is a qualified professional who meets the requirements to work in a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Denver. The After School Program Leader is hired by and directly accountable to the principal. Daily supervision and tasks are overseen by the Site Director.

The After School Program Leader is expected to abide by the policies and procedures of the local school, the Archdiocese of Denver, and the Office of Catholic Schools. The After School Program Leader cooperates with the Principal and Site Director in providing an environment that promotes the ministry of Catholic education.

The After School Program Leader:
• works directly with an assigned group of students, to provide a safe, responsible, well-supervised afterschool program while acting as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor.
• demonstrates a genuine interest in the growth, development, and provision of a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for the students they teach.
• manages students through leadership, communication, and patience.
• prepares an engaging and creative learning environment, establishing a positive rapport with students and co-workers, and preparing materials and supplies.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• Ability to speak and write Standard English appropriate in a school setting.
• Must pass criminal background check and fingerprinting.
• Attend a Virtus Safe Environment Training class through the Archdiocese of Denver
• First Aid and CPR certification
• Experience working with youth in a classroom, after school, or recreation environment.
• Excellent communication skills

The duties and responsibilities of the After School Program Leader include but are not limited to:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Be Program Leader qualified according to the Colorado Department of Early Childhood
• Be familiar with the Colorado Department of Early Childhood Rules Regulating School-Age Child Care Centers and follow these rules.
• Obtaining 15 hours of training in Early Childhood Education each school year.
• Plan and implement fun and engaging developmentally appropriate recreational and enrichment activities.
• Lead and supervise small and large groups of students by recognizing potential issues and applying established school procedures using problem solving methods, behavior management techniques, positive redirection, or appropriate corrective action as necessary to support students in making positive behavior choices.
• Identify student needs and communicate these to Site Director.
• Evaluate the program daily to suggest improvements, needs, hazards and/or trends to Site Director for further evaluation.
• Observe students daily to check for bruises, cuts, scrapes, rashes, or other indications of injury or illness to report to Site Director for further evaluation.
• Responsible for designated group of students for duration of program or until replacement Program Leader arrives - never leave a group unsupervised.
• Responsible for immediately reporting and documenting all injuries or incidents utilizing established procedures for notification to the Site Director and parents.
• Demonstrate reliability and punctuality by arriving on time for scheduled shifts.
• Attendance and participation at all required staff meetings, trainings, and development activities.
• Serve as a positive adult role model for children in the program through appropriate dress, speech, attitude, and courtesy.
• Maintain cleanliness in all program areas; assist with the setup and breakdown during program day to contribute to ongoing maintenance to keep the school or community site clean and orderly.
• Maintain student safety by ensuring that staff or parents are signing students in and out of the program and maintaining an accurate program roster daily.
• Ensure age-appropriate conversation among students and staff; promote good manners and encourage common courtesy among students and staff.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Program Leaders are expected to actively work, monitoring students at all times.
• Assist in keeping the site clean, including cleaning tables, mopping, and vacuuming.
• Provide support for the daily snack/meal program including preparation, serving, clean up.
• Access to reliable transportation to and from Program site.
• Maintain the highest degree of confidentiality in staff and student matters.
• Any additional duties related to the afterschool program as assigned by the Site Director

OTHER SKILLS:
• Ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, sit, crouch, bend, speak, and hear.
• Ability to engage in physical activity with students without limitation.
• Ability to lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 40 pounds.
• Knowledge of developmental needs of school age children.
• Assist students with clothing, wash-up, and toilet routines, if necessary.
• Ability to execute appropriate safety and emergency procedures, including leading evacuations and providing basic first aid.

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• Be a fully initiated Catholic in the communion of the Catholic Church and intentionally living out the five precepts of the Church (CCC 2041-2043).
• Refrain from promotion or approval of, or the living out of, any conduct or lifestyle that would reflect discredit or disgrace on, or cause scandal in relationship to, the Archdiocese of Denver, or considered to be in contradiction with Catholic doctrine or morals.
